668-STUDIO OR CIRCLE OF ANTON VAN DYCK (1599-1641). "CRUCIFIXION", CIRCA 1630.

Oil on canvas.
Re-framed and restored by CAEM whose study is attached.  Following analysis and restoration carried out on the work, The CAEM (Centre for Modern Art) confirms the attribution of this work to the studio of Anton van Dyck. Having taken into consideration the pigments, processes used in the preparation of the canvas and the characteristics of the master which are evident in the painting, it is even considered possible that Van Dyck himself participated in the composition or the painting of some of the figures. ANTON VAN DYCK was born in Antwerp where, during his apprenticeship he was a disciple of Hendrik van Balen and Rubens. After a short stay in London from 1620 to1621. Van Dyck moved to Italy, where he lived for six years in Geneva and travelled around the country imbibing the styles of masters such as Tintoretto, Tiziano or Veronese. This Italian influence is evident in the figures of Maria Magdalena and the woman who appears partially to the left, whose baroque treatment is in contrast with the Flemish representation of Christ, The Virgin and St John the Evangelist. It is an intelligent, thoughtful and eclectic composition which fuses Flemish and clear Italianate styles. As much in the composition as in the style, The Crucifixion that Subarna has the honour of offering, shows considerable similarities to that made by Jacob Jordaens in 1618 for Saint Paul’s Church in Antwerp where it still hangs.
