Lot description
Lost wax bronze.
Signed.
Sculpture reproducing the one made by Frederic Marès for the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on Tibidabo (Barcelona). The original sculpture was made between 1934 and 1935 in workshops in Olot (Girona), and had the typical iconography: Christ with open arms, long hair and dressed in an open tunic that revealed his heart, an iconography that was faithful to the visions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. The sculpture was 8 metres high, making it the highest in the city of Barcelona at that time. However, in 1936 it was melted down to use the bronze for war material, thus losing Frederic Marès' original sculpture. In 1969, the temple was inaugurated with a statue replacing Marès' by Josep Miret.
62 x 54.5 x 16 cm (without stand); 67.5 x 54.5 x 20.5 cm (with stand).
