Lot description

Iron.
This kind of objects were used by the priests and diviners of the Yoruba people, originally from West Africa, mainly from northwestern Nigeria and the surrounding regions of Benin, to invoke Osanyin, the God of Nature who knows all plants, animals and minerals to cure mental and physical diseases.
The stick is surmounted by a bird with its wings outstretched surrounded by a ring of smaller birds, which represents the God's ability to control the spirits and supernatural forces of nature for healing and protection.
It still has the label ‘The Milton D. Ratner family collection Chicago’.
Piece mounted on a custom-made metal base.
Height 62 cm.
