Lot description

Mercury-gilt bronze and patinated bronze.
Unlike the personifications of "America" and "Africa" by the same author, this table clock depicts the "good savage". In French colonial times, he was considered a helpful and reliable servant. On many occasions, in addition to being a bearer of goods, he was also a bearer of important messages or confidential tasks, hence the term "good". There are original watercolour designs by Reiche in Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Rue Rivoli no. 107.
In working order but in need of revision. Slight marks on the base and dial.
36 x 26 x 9 cm.
